Many voices exist among us. All of them claim to be telling the truth, and so many people are confused. That is the state of our world today. This episode addresses the reality of false prophets and our need to be more discerning about what we hear. False prophets claim to be sent by God but were not. They claim to be saying what God told them to say when He did not.
Even during the days of the apostles, false prophets were a problem. In 1 John 4:1, John writes, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (NASB). John juxtaposes false prophets with those who are sent by God. We must be able to discern one from the other. That means we should not openly believe every person who comes before us in the name of the Lord.
As we draw closer to the return of our Lord, false prophets will become a bigger problem. It will become increasingly important for us to heed God’s warning for us to not believe every spirit. “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24, NASB).
